What to expect

Contacting Citizens Advice Mid Mercia for the first time may be a daunting experience. This page therefore aims to give you an overview of what you can expect when you first contact us and how your journey with us may go.

When you first speak to us…

To first contact Citizens Advice Mid Mercia, you will need to telephone the free adviceline on 0808 278 7972. Our adviceline is operated by volunteers and staff members who are there to listen to you and to assess your situation or problem.

When you first call, you will be greeted by an assessor who will have the skills and training to listen to you, understand your issue and identify any additional support you may require.

The assessor will complete either a brief or detailed assessment (depending on the nature of your problem) and will then do one of the following:

  • Provide you with assisted information to guide you through fixing your problem yourself;
  • Signpost you to relevant organisations who can offer more in-depth specialist support or advice in relation to your problem;
  • Book you a face-to-face appointment with one of our trained advisors – all appointments are subject to availability, but we will endeavour to see you as soon as possible.

We offer face-to-face appointments across a variety of locations, scroll down to view these locations. Please only attend these locations once you have a booked appointment.

It is important for you to know that our trained advisors will not tell you what do, they will only present you with the options and potential consequences.

So that your appointment can go as smoothly as possible, it is important for you to bring all the relevant paper work required to help us support you. By bringing all relevant documents, this will help us avoid any delays.

Follow the link below for more information on what to bring to your appointment:

Issues we can help you with

There are many reasons people choose to contact Citizens Advice Mid Mercia and there are many issues we can support you with. The following are just some of the areas we can help you with:

Benefits

The benefits system can be very daunting and complicated to understand, especially with the many changes that regularly take place. It may be that you do not understand what benefits are available to you, that you have a form with questions on it that you do not know how to answer, or that you cannot understand why a benefit has been turned down or stopped and would like to challenge this decision. Whatever the issue, we can help!

Employment

Going to work plays a vital role in most people’s lives. However, there are times when you can be faced with difficulties or challenges at work. You may feel like you have been discriminated against or maybe you feel like you have been unfairly dismissed.  It can be intimidating not knowing your rights or not knowing who you can talk to. You are not alone – we can help.

Consumer Rights

Have you ever bought something on-line or from a store and later find that you are experiencing issues with that product? Do you want to cancel a contract and/or claim a refund? Maybe you want to want to switch energy suppliers or want to make a complaint against a service. Whatever your consumer issue, not knowing your consumer rights can make it difficult for you to reach a resolution. For support with consumer issues, we have a dedicated help-line to guide you through your rights.

Call our Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline; 03454 04 05 06 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

Housing

Your home should be where you feel safe. It is therefore important to know and understand your rights and responsibilities to manage any housing issues you may come up against. However, it is not always that simple and there are many factors that can make it difficult to know what to do, such as: eviction notices, difficult landlords, difficult neighbours or not having a place to call home.  We can help you to retain that feeling of being safe.

Family

Family issues can be complicated and emotionally challenging. If your relationship has broken down, there are so many factors to consider, including separation and divorce, maintenance and child support, your rights and responsibilities as a parent, change of name and who will live in the family home.  If you have lost somebody, you may want to know what to do when someone dies or need help understanding a will. Whilst we cannot provide legal advice, we can provide you with assisted information and signpost you to relevant organisations who can provide specialist legal advice.

Immigration

To assist with complicated immigration issues, it is important to have an understanding of the law around immigration. Our advice on immigration issues is limited as we do not have specialist immigration advisors. However, we can still help you as we are able to signpost you to the relevant specialist organisations that can provide specific advice.

We now have an EUSS Support Team to help citizens of EU (but not British), EEA and Switzerland to complete their applications to EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after brexit beyond 2020. More information is here

Debt

Many of us experience financial difficulties at some point in our lives. Sometimes, these financial issues can spiral of control due to various factors, including loss of employment, personal circumstances or relationship break downs. It can become difficult to manage your finances alone and that’s where we can help – we have a dedicated debt specialist team who can support on a range of debt related issues.
